Portraits and Photography

Portrait: defined by webster’s dictionary as:

  • “a painting, drawing, or photograph of a person that usually only includes the person’s head and shoulders”

  • “a detailed description of something or someone”

  • “a way of printing a page so that the shorter sides are on the top and bottom and the longer sides are on the left and right”

Portrait: as most people think of it:

  • a photo of one person taken by a professional photographer meant to be displayed either at home, at work, or on social media (or all of the above–depending on the individual).

Portrait: as I see it as a photographer:

  • a depiction of a person as they are in today’s present state or as they wish to be seen.

What do I mean by that (“as they wish to be seen”)?

  • people have many talents. Some are happy with a self portrait.
  • Others wish to be better photographed to catch a more flattering view of themselves than a selfie on a smart phone.
  • Others wish to showcase a talent or career or activity that they have a passion for…something that gives their life meaning. Some hear the word “portrait” and think of a Family Session. Others think of the old time portraits that were painted and hung on a castle wall…(such as depictions of Eleanor of Aquitaine, King Richard the Lionheart, the Tzars of Russia, Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa)…

For those that wish to be showcased in the talent or career or activity that gives their life meaning (be that motherhood, fatherhood, swimming, golf, baseball, cosplay, re-enactments, hockey, ice skating, skate boarding, botany, horticulturist, executive, non-profit leader, photographer, etc) it represents a challenge to represent that person in their passion. That is the portrait I love to help create. Portraits are a team effort for without the client there to share their passion, their career, their life, I have no canvas on which to create a portrait….

Such a creation should be shared. Most of us share EVERYTHING on social media. I love social media. It is a great way to share life and passion…especially with those you don’t see every day. However, it is not the ultimate goal. The goal of a photographer when wik_elizabeth-i_rainbow-portraitcreating a portrait is to help you create something that you can personally share with all who enter your home. Not just those who are on social media. To personally share art with those that matter, Portraits are hung in your home to show your Passion, your love for life, to showcase YOU, Your FAMILY, to show what matters to YOU.

For  this reason, cd’s are given with purchases of photographs purchased. Not given as a collection of an entire session to be lost in cyberspace. Art is not digitally stored on a device to get shoved away in a drawer or a box or a closet. Art and Love are meant to be shared… to be part of your home. So please understand when a photographer says “I don’t offer cd’s”…what they are truly saying to you is I want you to have something special for your home that shows the love you have for your journey through the adventure we call LIFE. You deserve something unique and something to display. Not something to hide on a device in a drawer or closet or box in that closet….because YOU are special.

More examples of past Art/Portraits from the past…which demonstrate art, presence, passion, and define WHO they were and HOW we see them….

Specials: the Day for Mothers

I know. Every day is special for mothers when you are a Mom. Moms deserve to be celebrated daily…but sometimes we take every day people for granted. Moms are special. Moms are the ones who are there for you from the first moment of your life up until the very last day of hers…No one can be what your mom is to you. Take the day to celebrate HER…in 2016…and include her Mom… Check it out!

Generation Portraits

are a wonderful gift for mother’s day.

What is that you ask? Well I posted a blog on that earlier but here’s a refresher: “Generation Portraits” are special portraits that include usually three or more family members from three or more generations. For example: my mother, myself and my daughter in one portrait together would be a “generation portrait” showcasing three generations of women in our family.

Generation-collage-02HartzellWomen-5gens-plain-logo-smThis is a generation portrait. What are the numbers for? The first lady in this portrait passed away some time ago. The photo of her was taken in 1973. Her daughter next to her passed away a few years later and her photo shown here was taken in 1983.  A photo of the matriarchal line to share with future generations was desired.  I put my artistic skills to work with the materials in possession. Here is that result. A generation portrait showing the women who have been key influences in someone’s life and of whom they are a direct descendant. Now…that special offer I mentioned…From Now (April 12th, 2016) through May 2nd, 2016–> Misha’s Photography & Restoration is  offering this style of generation portraits to YOU! Event: King Author’s Court

April 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of 2016 marked the 40th annual medieval fair for Norman, Oklahoma. It’s free to attend this medieval fair and a great way to kick off the fair season in the midwest. We haNormanMedievalFairA-2016.jpgd a wonderful time. We met up with Frank Kieth and his wonderful sculptures. We saw Michelle and her lovely assortment of corsetry! We saw many, many vendors and some wonderful shows as well.

This fair is great for interacting with characters, people watching and even pet watching! We saw dogs of all shapes and sizes and even some in costume! There was also a bearded dragon and some Birds of Prey!
The live action chess game was absolutely wonderful!NormanMedievalFairB-2016.jpg Have you ever seen such a thing? Fear not! if by some misbegotten chance you missed Norman’s lovely fair and shopping opportunity, you can visit the Castle of Muskogee in May. They also have a live action chess match… though you won’t see King Author or Queen Guinevere. Though you could chance to catch a live action chess match and a mermaid grotto…

King Author’s court at Norman was a lovely day and the weather was altogether grand for the celebration. The food is wonderful and of great variety…and the people are many!

To catch your eye and the scope of possibilities for next year in Norman, check out our gallery of this saturday’s meanderings. See you in Muskogee!

Events: Emergency Preparedness Expo

We visited the Emergency Preparedness Expo this past Saturday (March 26th). Have you heard of it? Tis the season–tornado season — when emergency responders in Oklahoma are kept very busy. Between tornadoes, fires, and floods, spring creates LOTS of work for these crews and the volunteers involved.

It was a beautiful day to be outside. I know a lot of the families were out doing community Easter Egg Hunts–such fun for the kids…but there was a nice turn out at the Expo too. We had many of our Fire Departments compete in a “Fire Fighter’s Challenge” event to show YOU what they are trained for in a more fun and entertaining environment. EVENTS-FireFighterChallenge-collage2016BLOG-sm(Rolling Hills, Oak Grove, Wagoner Fire Department, Flat Rock, White Horn, Coweta Fire Department). These kinds  of events are great for you to get to know those who serve your community and for them to get to know you as well. Events like the Emergency Preparedness Expo also give you valuable information should you ever find yourself in need of it.

Do you know what to do or who is involved in emergency situations? Well anyone who is, could be, might be were there at the Expo on Saturday. We enjoyed seeing the Air EVENTS-EmrgncyPrepEXPO2-collage2016BLOGsmEvac Lifeteam land their helicopter at the event. Saturday’s Air Evac team was from Muskogee. THANK YOU for being their Saturday! This is always great fun for the kids as they get to see the inside of a helicopter and even sit inside if they wish… The Air Evac Lifeteam is also on hand for questions and one on one interaction. Fun and Education all at the same time! Imagine.

On top of that we also enjoyed watching the canine rescue teams demonstrate their techniques. The rescue dogs are a joy beyond measure to watch and seemed to enjoy showing off their skills also! Emergency Management was there with literature and a trophy for the winners of the Fire Fighter Challenge. The trophy will travel to each winning station year after year! So be sure to come out next year to support your local station!

EVENTS-EmrgncyPrepEXPO-collage2016BLOG-smWe visited with the Broken Arrow Police Department and got to check out their “Share the Road” program which is about motor cycle safety awareness. Many Police departments all over Wagoner County attended the Expo. The DAV had a mobile unit set up as well as the Oklahoma Blood Institute and the American Red Cross. Water Safety was also there. Storm Shelter companies like Atlas Safe Rooms were there. If you haven’t seen them, you can find them at Woodland Hills Mall now. The County Sheriff was in attendance as was AEP. It was a great time to wander and ask questions and learn about emergencies when there isn’t one in progress. Often times we don’t bother until it is needed and then we miss a lot of necessary information. I am hoping next year is bigger and better! Check out our photo gallery of the event! Coweta American was there and also has a gallery. I am sure that we didn’t catch everything there so Check out the Chamber and the Newspaper. Visit the links and the facebook pages. This is an annual event so please, check out the companies here and bookmark their links. Visit and support them as part of your community. Keep in touch and visit the Expo in 2017!

Specials: Month of Love

February is the month we all stress about Valentine’s Day and what to get that special someone…or what to do if that special someone has not yet appeared.

Special Someone doesn’t have to be the Lover in your life. It can be your Mother, Father, Grandparent, Son, Daughter, or any Special Person that means the world to you and you just can’t imagine life without them there by your side.

Some People have the opinion that giving a photo of your self to someone is vain. That may be true….but having a photo session WITH that person makes it special and loving… instead of all about vanity. So…what are YOU waiting for?

Make Your appointment with that Special Person TODAY! Valentine’s Day may pass you by…but it’s never too late! That person in your life is always going to be special. Tell them. Contact us. Let’s get your session set up today! Mention this blog post when setting up your session and get a free 8×10 portrait from your session!

Pet Portraits are fun and can show such unexpected adventure.  That adventure can be seen in your own backyard like Penny’s portrait or on location like Suzie’s portrait! It’s great to see your pet happy and having fun no matter where you are. During the fall, some even have a great time with dressing up their pet for trick or treat night! Does YOUR pet have a costume this year? What are you waiting for?? Let’s get together and have some FUN!

Welcome to OKLAHOMA: You are currently visiting Catoosa’s historic site on RT 66

Catoosa’s historic site was once an alligator farm…it was also once a swimming hole and water park where children celebrated SUMMER! If you have ever traveled RT 66 then you have passed this beautiful place in Oklahoma’s heritage and history.

They now have a gift store and take donations as the local historic site is kept up and run by the historical society (last I heard)….let us know if you’d like your next shoot to be at a cool historic site in Catoosa, OK.

Where will adventure take YOU next??

Portraits

What is a Portrait?

Webster’s dictionary defines it this way:

1. a painting, drawing, or photograph of a person that usually only includes the person’s head and shoulders; 2.a detailed description of something or someone; 3. a way of printing a page so that the shorter sides are on the top and bottom and the longer sides are on the left and right.orFull Definition of PORTRAIT:     1 picture; especially :  a pictorial representation of a person usually showing the face;  2 a sculptured figure :  bust;  3 a graphic portrayal in words

What I consider a portrait:

“a portrait is a fitting likeness of an individual, place or thing which portrays the subject’s personality, lifestyle, and/or character through a photograph or a painting.”

Portraits can be taken of a home or piece of property, person, or a pet/animal. We commonly use “photograph” instead of “portrait” as the word “portrait” is more personal.

Portraits are used to measure changes in the growth of children, to capture lifestyles, and to capture a special occasion which one or more would like to remember for all time.

We like to celebrate and share moments like:

  • Baby’s first year;

Contact us NOW for YOUR session!

  • A teen’s last year of school (senior year);
  • A daughter/son’s wedding;
  • College Graduations
  • Parent’s silver anniversary;
  • Special Achievements
  • Military Service
  • Engagements
  • Reunions
  • Promotions

All of these are great things and wonderful moments to celebrate. We all wish to remember and share special times with loved ones. That is what portraits are for. . . . . . . What was your last celebration? When?

Family is always a good thing to celebrate as are friendships! So. . . what are you waiting for? Let’s take some Portraits!

Mother’s Day 2015

Mother’s Day 2015:

How did YOU spend Mother’s Day? It has become almost a tradition for my Mother and my Daughter to spend the day at OKRF on Mother’s Day. Three generations together at Fair. A great time enjoyed by all.

Happy Mother's Day!
Happy Mother’s Day!

Mother’s Day at the Castle has it’s favorites….there are always “must see” acts. While we enjoy OKRF, we do have our favorites. The Jolly Rogers, The Brothers Dimm (also known as the Mud Men), Karma Dogma Show, and usually the birds of Prey show…however we missed that one. Royal Gauntlet used to do the show and now it is Knight Wing. We visited the Italian quarter and saw Tribal Circus. We tried Wulgamut but the echo inside the cave made it too loud to enjoy so we weren’t able to stay long. This doesn’t affect everyone and they are worth the listen…if the cave gets to you then catch them at pub-sing at the crown inn towards the end of the day.

If you got the chance to spend the day with your Mom…then you had a very special day indeed. IF you did not, don’t think you missed out. Make a date and spend the day with her any day! Mother’s day can be any day regardless of your calendar. Mothers are special and any day is a great day to spend with MOM. ❤

Happy Mother’s Day to ALL the Moms out there…and God Bless each and every one of YOU!

Walk past the pirate stage and BAGS shop into the realm of faeires and mermaids and make believe. You may even see Peter Pan and Wendy. (think “other realm”…it does require some mischief and a little imagination but I think you can manage those)…

Hear the Sirens’ songs …many a ship has sank due to the siren song….but I think the pirate stage will interest you once you listen…”Sirena” (pictured left) will be taking 2016 off so see them this year at OKRF while you can!

Check back for more! It is my goal to visit castleton once each weekend throughout it’s 20th run. Posted here will be the sights I see….so YOU can enjoy them too! Maybe I’ll even see YOU there. 😀

Country Girl USA

This past weekend I had the opportunity to do a shoot with a young lady who is looking to build a portfolio as an aspiring model. She is great to work with and very “girl next door” down to earth.
Fellow photographer Roger Toliver  and I had a wonderful time at a great location in Bixby, OK.

Bixby Barn Shoot Bixby Barn Shoot Bixby Barn Shoot Bixby Barn Shoot Bixby Barn Shoot Bixby Barn Shoot Bixby Barn Shoot

On location shoots are great. They are like a mini adventure for the “model(s)” and the photographer(s). What’s even better is that on location offers the use of “props” that you don’t have to tote around and you could go ANYWHERE! 🙂 I love on location. The same location varies with each person or group you shoot as personalities do come out and do make a difference. ❤

Every day is a journey through the adventure of life….and we should always make the most of the adventure! Wouldn’t want to miss anything 🙂

So…who’s up for a shoot? Contact me!

You can locate me on Facebook, Twitter, my Website, and you can see galleries on both my website and facebook pages. Please visit and let me know what you think! 😀

Have a wonderful week! …til next time!
