The holiday was set in place to show appreciation and respect for our military service persons. This particular holiday was formerly known as Decoration Day. Its origins came after the American Civil War in order to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century, Memorial Day became a day to honor all Americans who have died while in military service. For some it is also a time to remember loved ones whether in military service or not. For others (such as children) it is the beginning of summer.
Sometimes history is hard to relate to. Make it personal. discover your family roots and see how long your family has fought for your freedoms, your rights, your current way of life. America may be young but we can continue to be a great nation! Love, honor and respect are a great part of that heritage. We should pass that on to our children and their children for as long as we value our freedoms, our way of life, and those who have served.
“Some gave all…” is not just a phrase. One life is all we have no matter how we choose to spend it. There are soldiers who never came home because it wasn’t possible. There were some who came home only to be laid to rest and their families at least have closure. There are others who continue to serve over and over and over again in the danger zone of war and strife all over the world because they are needed and they believe in the right of freedom.
To all of these soldiers….
no matter their time, their place, or their branch of service….
A lot happens in May around the Tulsa and Broken Arrow areas.
May 1st is May Day (or Beltane, if you travel the wiccan or celtic circles of life). This is the time to celebrate spring time, good crops, births and new life in general….though with this year’s record history of snowfall in Oklahoma in MAY(!)…spring might be hard to see at the moment.
May 5th, Cinco de Mayo….I know a lot of us will be celebrating Saturday night instead of Sunday due to work and church but celebrations are good and they usually include a healthy dose of FUN!
May 4th & 5th also opens up the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival at the Castle of Muskogee for the 2013 season! YES! I knew that’s what you were waiting to hear, right? 😉 This year the fair (OKRF) runs through June 1 & 2….for a 5 week run! Each weekend is a different themed celebration at the Castle.
May 4th & 5th is romance weekend. May 10th is student day. May 11th & 12th celebrates Mother’s Day. May 18th & 19th is Pirate weekend! arrgh! May 25th, 26th and 27th is Celtic weekend with a salute to our troops on Memorial Day (the 27th). June 1st & 2nd is Gypsy Bazaar!
We absolutely cannot forget Mother’s Day which falls on May 12th this year. Mothers deserve to be celebrated. Don’t forget to let your Mom know how important she is in your life this year.
Graduations from High School and Colleges all over the state also take place in mid-May….so
congratulate your friends and family members for their accomplishments and enjoy the summer with them too!
Memorial Day!! (May 27th, 2013) That day that begins the swim season for so many…Bring on SUMMER!!! and don’t forget to remember our troops, the men and women who have served over the years so we can enjoy our rights and freedoms in our own way and in our own time.
Thank a Veteran…Hug a Soldier…or just say a Prayer for those who are currently serving & away from families of their own.
May is definitely a wonderful and busy month!
Leave a comment and let us know what you do with it!
Today is the day of summer’s official arrival. In Oklahoma, they are expecting 100 degree days for this weekend…so I hear. Me, I don’t mind much. Give me a place to swim and I can deal….I love summer! the heat, the warm rains, the days of fun in the sun and ice cream! all my favorite things as a kid have not yet left me….Thankfully! 😀
I know Memorial Day is past. I know that is the day of remembrance. But, that should not be the only time we remember….so today (not on a day specifically set aside) is the day I choose to do some remembering of my own.
I took a trip to our local cemetery. I have many family members there. Our troops, our soldiers, our families….deserve more than one day of remembrance. This is my tribute to them….though it is not enough! I think of them daily…but it is good to set aside a day of remembering and thankfulness for the freedoms we have….thanks to our soldiers.
OKRF was a blast. I hated to miss the special events planned for Memorial Day in honor of our veterans….however, family time is a good time and reason to miss any event. Post comments here about your Memorial Day 2012….
Hope you all had a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day!
The end of May 2012 is fast approaching. I don’t know about you, but I am still wondering what happened to the beginning of this year. It is just about half over. Fortunately, the weather is good and the sunshine is welcome! 😀
Summer vacation is coming if yours hasn’t already started and people are looking for those water sports and swimming holes to open. After all, Memorial Day is the weekend it all begins!
Memorial Day is also a day of remembrance for many. This is the weekend we take flowers to decorate the resting places of those who have gone before us. Memories are a wonderful comfort. They are also a way to share those you love with those you love who never had the chance to know them.
I hope Memorial Day is a wonderful time for you filled with happy memories that you get to share with many friends and family members. Let me what fills your Memorial Day of May 2012. Leave a comment here to share.
