Portraits and Photography

Portrait: defined by webster’s dictionary as:

  • “a painting, drawing, or photograph of a person that usually only includes the person’s head and shoulders”

  • “a detailed description of something or someone”

  • “a way of printing a page so that the shorter sides are on the top and bottom and the longer sides are on the left and right”

Portrait: as most people think of it:

  • a photo of one person taken by a professional photographer meant to be displayed either at home, at work, or on social media (or all of the above–depending on the individual).

Portrait: as I see it as a photographer:

  • a depiction of a person as they are in today’s present state or as they wish to be seen.

What do I mean by that (“as they wish to be seen”)?

  • people have many talents. Some are happy with a self portrait.
  • Others wish to be better photographed to catch a more flattering view of themselves than a selfie on a smart phone.
  • Others wish to showcase a talent or career or activity that they have a passion for…something that gives their life meaning. Some hear the word “portrait” and think of a Family Session. Others think of the old time portraits that were painted and hung on a castle wall…(such as depictions of Eleanor of Aquitaine, King Richard the Lionheart, the Tzars of Russia, Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa)…

For those that wish to be showcased in the talent or career or activity that gives their life meaning (be that motherhood, fatherhood, swimming, golf, baseball, cosplay, re-enactments, hockey, ice skating, skate boarding, botany, horticulturist, executive, non-profit leader, photographer, etc) it represents a challenge to represent that person in their passion. That is the portrait I love to help create. Portraits are a team effort for without the client there to share their passion, their career, their life, I have no canvas on which to create a portrait….

Such a creation should be shared. Most of us share EVERYTHING on social media. I love social media. It is a great way to share life and passion…especially with those you don’t see every day. However, it is not the ultimate goal. The goal of a photographer when wik_elizabeth-i_rainbow-portraitcreating a portrait is to help you create something that you can personally share with all who enter your home. Not just those who are on social media. To personally share art with those that matter, Portraits are hung in your home to show your Passion, your love for life, to showcase YOU, Your FAMILY, to show what matters to YOU.

For  this reason, cd’s are given with purchases of photographs purchased. Not given as a collection of an entire session to be lost in cyberspace. Art is not digitally stored on a device to get shoved away in a drawer or a box or a closet. Art and Love are meant to be shared… to be part of your home. So please understand when a photographer says “I don’t offer cd’s”…what they are truly saying to you is I want you to have something special for your home that shows the love you have for your journey through the adventure we call LIFE. You deserve something unique and something to display. Not something to hide on a device in a drawer or closet or box in that closet….because YOU are special.

More examples of past Art/Portraits from the past…which demonstrate art, presence, passion, and define WHO they were and HOW we see them….

Thirteen Days of Halloween: FIVE

This session was a lot of fun. Children don’t often have a long attention span before they are school age and sometimes this discourages people to take up projects like this one. Pets tend to have even less of an attention span…depending on the breed and personality.  This young lady is a ball of energy and “Toto” was too. We did have a LOT of fun shooting and my little model loved getting dressed up to go out and play. 😀 Meet “Dorothy and Toto…her little dog too”.

Sirena: The Sirens …

The Sirens….

Ladies of the sea with voices to sooth, entrance, and capture the hearts and souls of men throughout eternity…. This is what I think of when I hear the word “siren”. Siren encompasses so much more depth and feeling than “mermaids”…and I don’t think all mermaids can sing.Castle Plunder and Pilage weekend 2014

Most people hear the word “siren” and think song, mermaid, sea, mythology. I saw a stage act at the Renaissance Fair at the Castle of Muskogee this May. Sirena. These three lovely Ladies embody the word “Siren.”

All three are beautifully enchanting in voice, appearance, and personality. Their music….to die for! It is captivating, hauntingly beautiful, and full of soulful passion. It sounds tribal with the drums (played by the Sirens as they sing AND dance!). It makes me long for the ocean waves crashing against the rocks…I would say crashing against the hull of a huge 10309735_751542471533919_2614705823734075108_npirate ship…but I must confess that I do not know what that actually sounds like outside of the movies like “Pirates of the Caribbean.” However it does pick me up and carry me away to another time and place where mythology lives along with goddesses of the song and sea known as sirens… loved and feared by seafaring men worldwide and throughout time.

If you are fully curious and would like to know more about these Ladies of the Deep our modern day sirens: “Sirena”… please allow me to point you in a few different but well traveled paths of knowledge.

Sirena was on the cover of a renaissance magazine during the month of May in 2014-seen on a news stand coming out of Reasor’s….yet I have been unable to find the cover or the magazine since.

Theses ladies have Festival awards for “Best Music group” and “Best new cd”….They will enchant you. Aglaope (Amanda Ellis), Legeia (Tegan Elliott) and Raidne (Sam Nolte) are Sirena – sirens to love and enjoy while they sing to your very soul, should you dare to listen!

A couple of the influences on their music and style are Enya and Stomp… new age and celtic… with a touch of soul.

The Castle of Muskogee was alive with the invigorating music of the Sirens…. “Sirena” during the two weekends they were performing at the Castle on the Harbor stage. These beautiful and enchanting young women have voices that make their music come alive and are down to earth as well. It was wonderful to get the chance to see them at the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival.

As mentioned above, here are some other places to gain knowledge of these enchanting sirens of the new millennia. They have an official website. The trio has been together for about two or three years and have two cd’s out at the moment. You can shop for Sirena here to obtain your own memorabilia of “Sirena”. They are also found on Amazon.com with two available downloads. Their facebook.com site is a fun way to see photos of these lovely ladies at some of the past fairs at which they have performed.

Album Cover (NOT by Misha’s Photography) but a great representation of the enchanted Sirena and a good ad for their album (which I DO own).

And what music group as enchanting as this trio would not be found on youtube.com?

Muskogee’s Castle and Renaissance Festival was said to be a warm welcome to these beautiful Ladies. I know many people (both cast, vendors, and other stage acts as well as patrons at the fair) are hoping they revisit the Castle of Muskogee in May 2015. Look them up and discover some beautifully, soulful music….and the beauties behind it as well.

Best Wishes Sirena!

Book Covers and Photography

Photography is a wonderful field and an adventurous hobby.

I enjoy so many aspects of it. It relates to all things and all areas of life.

People want family photos and images of celebrations and life’s little moments so they can be shared and remembered.

Others need documentation for insurance, crimes, and job/projects completed.

Others need maps and aerial shots that show more than you can see from the ground.

Documenting the animal life and the value of protecting our environment through programs like recycling are also necessary. And would you believe in mermaids without photographs??

Photography also helps the novels you read (or any literature for that matter) come alive through the cover (and the occasional graphic novel)

Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Act

Not Just a Shutter Click

This information was originally found at Not Just a Shutter Click’s blog site.

I felt it was worth sharing….so here is the re-blog–but only in part. Please, click the link and read the FULL BLOG POST here!

The new Act (Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Act, which received Royal Assent) that got voted through by government allows all work considered to be an orphan work to get used for free. Orphan works are those works whose creator cannot be found.

What is orphan work? An orphan work is an image that is without IPTC Data… IPTC and metadata is something most enthusiast photographers bother with (you should) but the majority of photographers, especially those in the editorial markets, always fill in full IPTC which show’s the author of the image, copyright, contact details and so on. Well, the majority of websites, social networks and so on strip out ALL of this data. Your work, even something you shot a minute ago and uploaded, just became an orphan work. As such, it can now be used for free and for whatever purpose the thief of the image wants to use if for.

You may be asking what this has to do with you since most of this article/blog post relates to the UK….but the internet isn’t just in the UK or the Unite States, or just one country. If you post something online on ANY social media site, it is in cyber space! It is globally accessible! Think about that. Once it affects one area in a global network, how long before it affects the outer lying areas? We are all connected more so through the internet NOW –today–than ever before.  Think about it….and of course, feel free to leave a comment. 😀

Misha’s Photography and Restoration

Well, today is a great day! Adventure fun and summer!

Accomplishments make us feel great. I love my family, my friends, my work, my art….

Flowers in the Sky
roses on blue sky

Life is great! I know not everyone feels they can say that. I know that if I sat and thought about it, I could find things I am unhappy with…however….

I prefer the joys in life to the negative side of things. Positive focus helps combat the things we want to improve. this week, my focus has been on Photography…(big news right?)…

I photographed a reception for a dear friend and her family. I have another reception to shoot in august. I uploaded my website….finally! Misha’s Photography & Restoration is new and improved! Things seem to be rolling….forwards… always good to move forward.

August will be a busy month….stay tuned to hear what happens! 😀

Photo FUN!
