Portraits and Photography

Portrait: defined by webster’s dictionary as:

  • “a painting, drawing, or photograph of a person that usually only includes the person’s head and shoulders”

  • “a detailed description of something or someone”

  • “a way of printing a page so that the shorter sides are on the top and bottom and the longer sides are on the left and right”

Portrait: as most people think of it:

  • a photo of one person taken by a professional photographer meant to be displayed either at home, at work, or on social media (or all of the above–depending on the individual).

Portrait: as I see it as a photographer:

  • a depiction of a person as they are in today’s present state or as they wish to be seen.

What do I mean by that (“as they wish to be seen”)?

  • people have many talents. Some are happy with a self portrait.
  • Others wish to be better photographed to catch a more flattering view of themselves than a selfie on a smart phone.
  • Others wish to showcase a talent or career or activity that they have a passion for…something that gives their life meaning. Some hear the word “portrait” and think of a Family Session. Others think of the old time portraits that were painted and hung on a castle wall…(such as depictions of Eleanor of Aquitaine, King Richard the Lionheart, the Tzars of Russia, Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa)…

For those that wish to be showcased in the talent or career or activity that gives their life meaning (be that motherhood, fatherhood, swimming, golf, baseball, cosplay, re-enactments, hockey, ice skating, skate boarding, botany, horticulturist, executive, non-profit leader, photographer, etc) it represents a challenge to represent that person in their passion. That is the portrait I love to help create. Portraits are a team effort for without the client there to share their passion, their career, their life, I have no canvas on which to create a portrait….

Such a creation should be shared. Most of us share EVERYTHING on social media. I love social media. It is a great way to share life and passion…especially with those you don’t see every day. However, it is not the ultimate goal. The goal of a photographer when wik_elizabeth-i_rainbow-portraitcreating a portrait is to help you create something that you can personally share with all who enter your home. Not just those who are on social media. To personally share art with those that matter, Portraits are hung in your home to show your Passion, your love for life, to showcase YOU, Your FAMILY, to show what matters to YOU.

For  this reason, cd’s are given with purchases of photographs purchased. Not given as a collection of an entire session to be lost in cyberspace. Art is not digitally stored on a device to get shoved away in a drawer or a box or a closet. Art and Love are meant to be shared… to be part of your home. So please understand when a photographer says “I don’t offer cd’s”…what they are truly saying to you is I want you to have something special for your home that shows the love you have for your journey through the adventure we call LIFE. You deserve something unique and something to display. Not something to hide on a device in a drawer or closet or box in that closet….because YOU are special.

More examples of past Art/Portraits from the past…which demonstrate art, presence, passion, and define WHO they were and HOW we see them….

WWII Veterans – the B-17

The Flying Fortress: B-17

Over the weekend of May 20th – 22nd, 2016, we had the chance to visit with some Veterans and a very special organization from Texas. There are apparently only ELEVEN flying B-1 bombers left in the world today. We took the time to change our weekend plans to visit the Texas Raiders B-17 Flying Fortress. Her crew is amazing and friendly, not to mention dedicated. This is a once in a lifetime chance to experience a small piece of history.

It’s also a chance to meet Veterans who served

throughout history through the ages and brought us to our stance in freedom today. I never really appreciated nor did I particularly enjoy history as a child student nor as a college student. No one was ever able to make it personal or to create that personal connection. Here it is! That personal connection that makes history a wondrous adventure.

Check out the online gallery for a better view of our experience…or contact the Texas Raiders and find out when and where YOU can visit them. You can also find them on Facebook.

Thank You to those that have served throughout time!

Thank You to the Texas Raiders who keep history alive! 🙂

Holiday Portraits: An Easter Celebration

I know you probably read the title of this blog and thought you were going to see a bunch of kids’ portraits for Easter, right? I hope you aren’t disappointed. I wanted to do something a little more original this year. I want to display a portrait of Easter.

Are you wondering what I mean by that? How would you paint (or create) a portrait of Easter? East conjures so many memories and so many meanings….each is different for ever individual person that reads this.

When I think of Easter, I think of the childhood memories with my familly…the new outfit my grandmother had made for me, the Easter basket with candy and toys, the church service that would be taking place that Sunday…and the dinner and egg hunt that would happen after church.

I also think of the symbolism (for me) and this may of course be different for you….we each have our own thoughts, images, and memories that make up what we believe and how we perceive things.

If I was to create a “Portrait of Easter”, I would start with a glorious sunrise filled with birdsongs on a cool but not chilled foggy morning…..though this isn’t  a foggy morning…it is a golden sun:

Add the warm feeling that (for instance) Thomas Kinkaid paintings create or that walk through your favorite park path or special quiet place gives you…. “Remember Me

then add the laughter of children with happy hearts and not a care in the world for anything other than love of the people around them and the moment (which no child ever consciously thinks about)…

add the image of a golden egg (like Jack in the Beanstalk’s treasure when you first heard the story and imagined the scene in your mind)….with Warmth and love surrounding it (instead of the giant)….

Last…but not least, add a guide, friend, someone special to share this image/feeling with…

and NOW You have:

Easter’s portrait….

Book Covers and Photography

Photography is a wonderful field and an adventurous hobby.

I enjoy so many aspects of it. It relates to all things and all areas of life.

ml-photography-wrdprss-bckgrnd1-copy.jpg

People want family photos and images of celebrations and life’s little moments so they can be shared and remembered.

2012-CorgiPicnic-118

Others need documentation for insurance, crimes, and job/projects completed.

Others need maps and aerial shots that show more than you can see from the ground.

Documenting the animal life and the value of protecting our environment through programs like recycling are also necessary. And would you believe in mermaids without photographs??

Photography also helps the novels you read (or any literature for that matter) come alive through the cover (and the occasional graphic novel)

ICE: by Elissa Lewallen

Elissa Lewallen: Local Author

If you haven’t read this book, you should! It’s an interesting story about a girl and a shape-shifter. Yes it is science fiction. Here is a small piece of the description from the back of the book (also listed on the author’s page):

After her parents’ deaths and a sudden move to Alaska, Christine feels like nobody could possibly understand her. Then she meets Kavick, a strange boy who is also suffering from the loss of his family. Attractive and free-spirited, Kavick helps Christine during the most difficult time of her life and the two form an intense friendship, and possibly something more.
But Kavick has a secret: he can turn into a wolf.”

Elissa Lewallen is a local author from Oklahoma.

I am excited to say that this beautiful Lady has asked me to work with her on the second edition cover. Thank You, Elissa, for such a wonderful opportunity! I am excited to see the project begin and can’t wait to see what we create together!

Excel at ART at 73!

Retired Man becomes

One-of-a-Kind Artist!

This is an amazing story! I love that a 73 year old man who is retiring is also still looking into the future with a positive and tech-savy outlook! I wish more people would grasp that outlook! I know plenty of people who seem to think they are too old to learn.

New Artist using Microsoft Excel to paint Japanese Art at 73!

Mr. Tatsuo Horiuchi is a wonderful artist who uses Microsoft Excel to paint original Japanese art. He isn’t the first to use Excel to paint with….but he is the first to paint Japanese motifs with it. Way to Go!!! A new and fulfilling career as an artist at 73!

You, sir, are a role model and hero for all! I am so glad I ran across the original blog post on facebook.com. Please read it here!
